Fettercairn & South Aberdeenshire Coast

Depart Broad Street every Friday at 0900 hrs.
Returning to Broad Street for 1600 hrs.

Travelling south from Aberdeen, the Scotland Explorer heads to Fettercairn Distillery. The distillery has been in operation since 1824, making it one of Scotland's oldest malt whisky distilleries. The distillery is snugly tucked away at the foot of the Cairngorm Mountains from which it takes spring water supplies. This area is one of Scotland's most fertile regions, and is why Fettercairn is hidden amongst its forests and glens. These distinct characteristics combine to produce a balanced malt whisky with a fine character.

Departing from Fettercairn, the Scotland Explorer travels west to the coastal town of Stonehaven, famous for its fireball Hogmanay celebrations. The town grew up around an iron-age settlement but has recently grown as a commuter town due to the discovery of North Sea oil. The town centre retains its charm and the picturesque harbour is still in use.

After some free time in Stonehaven, we travel a short distance to Dunottar Castle, a ruined Castle featuring eleven distinct buildings ranging from the 13th to 17th century. There is a path of 800m leading to the castle, where, in addition to the ruin itself, you can enjoy breathtaking views out to sea and across the surrounding countryside. Dunottar was the setting for the 1990 film “Hamlet” staring Mel Gibson and Glenn Close.

From Dunottar we travel North, returning to Aberdeen.
